Interview with Data Egret

- In which areas do you expect PostgreSQL to grow most and how does your company contribute to and benefit from that growth?
-
The ever changing landscape of data management provides fertile ground for PostgreSQL on multiple levels.
The continued enhancement of performance and scalability features makes PostgreSQL an even more compelling choice for enterprises dealing with large and complex datasets. Pgvector with its efficiency provides an answer to the ever growing need for storage, retrieval and processing of data in turn allowing to ease the process of app development.
We believe that with Postgres’ robustness, extensibility and speed of data processing will remain at forefront among available database alternatives. As Postgres support is our key service, this is a positive outlook for us as a company.
- How does PostgreSQL help you bring value to your customers?
-
PostgreSQL is frequently referred to as “the world’s most advanced open source relational database” and at Data Egret we help our clients to unleash its full potential.
While there is a plethora of database solutions out there - from various Postgres forks to alternative commercial databases, we focus on “vanilla” Postgres.
First of all, because it provides the benefit of transparency to our clients - they know what’s in the pipeline from the development standpoint; second - because they don’t need to pay for licence and thus have control over their budget; and finally - because they know that they have the freedom to choose any vendor they want, so they get best specialists in the industry.
- Why does your company attend PostgreSQL Conference Europe?
-
For those who work with Postgres there are two key European conferences. These allow Postgres community members to come together and share their enthusiasm for the database and open source - these are FOSDEM and PGconf.EU
For us PGconf.EU provides an opportunity to better understand our clients’ needs and attract those who would benefit from our experience and Postgres know-how. It also allows us to give back to the community by sharing our knowledge - this year we have three talks, a tutorial by our colleagues and are sponsoring this fantastic event.
And last but not least, it allows us to get to know our clients, meet our friends and fellow Postgres community members, with whom we frequently interact, but rarely see each other face to face as part of our community commitments.
- Which interesting things should PGConf.EU attendees expect at your booth?
-
We prepared some cool swag that we hope will keep little PostgreSQL explorers who will be at the conference happy. We were also super pleased to hear that PGconf.EU kindly offers childcare for those who come to Prague with their children (huge kudos to the organisers!).
As usual, we will have some top notch Postgres brains at our booth for those who have questions about HA, backup and recovery, config optimisation and query tuning, migration as well as looking for architectural advice.
Have a technical or community related question? Just pop by.
- Which PostgreSQL extension do you benefit from most, and why?
-
pg_stat_statements has long been our go to extension and is used with each and every client. It’s one of our key tools for identifying performance bottlenecks and helps us to optimise query performance, make informed decisions on indexing, and enhance overall database efficiency.
PostGIS - is a unique postgres extension that adds support for geographic objects, transforming the database into a spatial database for GIS applications. With its ability of storage, retrieval, and analysis of geographic data, PostGIS is often used by our clients who have projects requiring spatial data management.
